Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a nationwide competitive examination in India conducted by UPSC.CSE is common examination for various civil Service positions offered by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

This examination will allow you to pursue your career in Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), along with various services under Group A, and Group B which include services related to Central Government and Union Territories respectively.
IAS Exam Age Limits
The minimum age requirement is 21 years of age to take the CSE. While the maximum age allowed is 32 years for the general category. The maximum age for OBC candidates is 35 years of age and for SC/ST the limit is 37 years of age.
Educational Qualification
The candidate appearing for the CSE should have at least a bachelor’s degree from any government recognized university or institute. Students in the final year of their bachelor’s degree are also allowed to appear for the exam if they can provide the required proofs while they apply for further UPSC exams.
Number of Attempts
Every candidate appearing for the UPSC exam gets a defined number of attempts based on their category.
SC/ST: Allowed infinite attempts till age 37
OBC: 7 attempts
General: 6 attempts

UPSC
The government of India is the biggest and most important employer of the country. The constitution of India enjoys the commission to select qualified people to fill these positions. This part deals with recruitment done by the commission annually through the civil service examination.
1. Plan of the Examination:
According to the current plan the civil service examination consists of three successive stages.
- Civil services preliminary exam (Objective Type)
- Civil Services main exam (Descriptive type)
- Interview
AGE LIMIT
Must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years on 1st August of the year of the examination, the upper age limit prescribed above will be relaxable:
- Up to maximum of five years if a candidate belongs to scheduled cast or scheduled tribes.
- Up to maximum of three years. If a candidate belongs to other backward classes.

Personality Test
Candidates who obtain such minimum qualifying marks in the written part of the Main Examination as may be fixed by the Commission at their discretion are summoned by them for an interview for a Personality Test. The Candidate will be interviewed by a Board who will have before them a record of his career. He will be asked questions on matters of general interest. The Object of the interview is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in public service by a Board of competent and unbiased observers. The test is intended to judge the mental caliber of a candidate. In broad terms, this is really an assessment of not only his intellectual qualities but also social traits and his interest in current affairs. Some of the qualities to be judged are mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgment, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion and leadership, intellectual and moral integrity.
The technique of the Interview is not that of a strict cross examination but of a natural, direct and purposive conversation which is intended to reveal the mental qualities of the candidates.
Applying to appear for the exam and failing to be present during the examination is not counted as an attempt while appearing for preliminary examination and disqualification or cancellation of the candidate is counted as an attempt.
